EXTENDED one-man operation of buses will not yield large benefits to London Transport, according to a report published by the Price Commission.
The commission was investigating LT's recently-granted 10 per cent fares increase and says that losses of up to ElOm could be incurred if LT does not improve productivity.
It says that there is considerable scope for improved productivity by bus and train drivers and, even more so, by maintenance engineers if they agree to weekend working.
Delays to bus services have not improved and are blamed largely on the troublesome fleet of Daimler and Leyland Fleetline double-deckers for which LT has been able to obtain only four year certificates of fitness upon recertification.
The £40m losses could occur if the Greater London Council does not alter its plans to halve LT's revenue support by 1981.
Increased capital expenditure by GLC to help LT achieve greater productivity is recognised by the commission as beneficial, but it doubts seriously whether LT can avoid a cash crisis in the short term.
