memory

Until now almost the only people whose efforts and achievements in the CM Lorry Driver of the Year Competition have not been recognised in tangible form are the army of voluntary workers without whom there would be no competition. The omission has been repaired by the Freight Transport Association, who as a memorial to my old friend, Sam Gunnell, formerly assistant secretary of the FTA South-eastern Region, have provided an award for the centre judged to have run the best contest of the year and a cash prize for the best driver in it.

Sam did, and his widow continues to do, much for the South Ruislip and London regions. He and I were fellow stewards at South Ruislip for years and I can testify to his dedication. At both centres Mrs Nan Gunnell, with Mrs Ted Tear, has set a standard in the production of results that would be difficult to surpass. Her courage in carrying on after Sam's unexpected death has earned everyone's admiration.

Arthur Sherlock-Masher, deputy president of the competition and one-time editor of CM, accepted the award from Dennis Saunders, chairman of the FTA Regional co-ordinating committee, at a luncheon party in London given by the FTA. Mrs Gunnell was much moved by the presentation to her of a smaller replica of the handsome silver plate that is the centre prize.
