THE BATTLE over the provision of services into a housing estate, between Chesterfield Borough Transport and East Midland Motor Services Ltd, (CM, July 14), is on the verge of being settled, following discusions between the parties and Derbyshire County Council.
This was revealed by the public transport co-ordinating officer of the County Council, Keith Orford, at the start of the second day of the hearing before the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners in Leeds. Chesterfield has sought a licence for a new cross-town service from Whittington Moor to the Grangevvood Farm Estate, and East Midland has countered with a proposal for a new service from Chesterfield Bus Station into the estate.
Discussions
Mr Orford said that following discussions between the parties, the operators now felt there was a basis for a settlement, leading to the withdrawal of the East Midland application.
Adjourning the applications and renewing dispensation granted to Chesterfield to extend an existing service, to provide a token service into the estate, the Chairman, Major General V. H. J. Carpenter, said it was better for all parties if there was a mutual agreement. No hardship would be caused by a postponement as it had been established that the majority of people on the estate already lived within 400 yards of a bus stop.
