Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Representatives of 18 trade unions covering all sectors of transport have decided to establish a TUC Transport Industries Committee. In the past, transport issues have been handled by the TUC Nationalized Industries Committee (set up in January 1951) which will continue to concern itself with other public enterprise issues. The new committee will enable future consideration of transport issues to be undertaken with greater direct involvement by interested unions. Mr Jack Jones was elected chairman of the committee.

Its first meeting will be held on October 13 but meanwhile representatives of the committee will be meeting Mr John Peyton, Minister for Transport Industries, on September 30 to put TUC views on the crisis in rural passenger transport, which is affecting both bus and rail transport users.

The setting up of a TUC Transport Industries Committee follows the formation last year of the TUC Construction Industry Committee and this year of the TUC Local Government Committee. A Steel Industry Committee already exists and moves have been made to set up a Health Services Committee.
