Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• This year's Automotive Trade Show included a good selection of new products to interest the workshop and paintshop manager.

Souriau has developed its Optima 4080 diesel system in conjunction with Perkins. It is a computerised monitoring system which compares the engine's current performance with its past test and preprogrammed values.

Sensors are fitted on various parts of the new engine, with seven monitors on the air, exhaust and oil systems. Engine speed, injector pipes, charging circuits are among other items that are checked to build up a comprehensive picture of the engine condition.

Fitting the sensors Lakes a couple of hours but connecting the measuring/recording box for each test will only take about five minutes, says Souriau. The test, which involves revving the engine up several times, can be made in the workshop or on the road.

Once the test has been run the data is downloaded into the computer and a quick check done to show up any problems. This compares the engine data with programmed standards and any deviations are highlighted.

The computer can then compare the results test with previous findings from the same engine and will alert the operator to possible faults.

The unit will cost about .£13,000 but will undergo Field trials before general release.

Sykes Pickavant was displaying a prototype timing kit for the Bosch VE pump which is used on the Ford 1.6, 1.8 and 2.5-litre and the VW 1.6 and 2.0-litre engines. A dial test

indicator in the kit measures TDC off the pump cam.

It should be available in the new year for around ,C140.

Grundig used the ATS to launch its DT1000 Combustion Tester for diesel engines. This is a free acceleration smoke meter for engines up to three litres which works on the opacity principal.

Five free accelerations are completed and the exhaust is heated for the test. Readout is in percentages.

European Automotive Products displayed a diesel smoke meter that works on the same principal and incorporates a printer to give a hard copy.

Alentic Orion and Plymovents were displaying new exhaust

extraction equipment. Alentic builds a range of extraction equipment based on reels, rails or a cornbination of the two. The system includes a retractable reel and counterbalanced hose system which will move along the rail and is claimed to give greater flexibility than its competitors.

Banbury-based Plymovent (formerly John Plymouth) showed its range of Swedish-made extractor systems. One is a rail-carried sys tern that automatically detaches from a departing vehicle; especially useful for emergency vehicle workshops.

Filter crusher

Alentic has also launched an oil filter crusher which removes oil from the filter to stop it leaking into the bin and reduces its volume making disposal easier.

Auto Ovens was showing systems for removing the paint and solvent from the air exhausted by spray booths.

In its paint extractor system the spraybooth exhaust is cut through by two water jet curtains before spirailing upwards to the open air. Most of the paint is forced out of the air by the water jet and the remainder is centrifuged to the walls of the unit. The water/paint mixture is then filtered and the water reused.

For solvent removal Auto Ovens has a charcoal filter system which can absorb up to 40% of its own weight in solvent. However, the paint must be removed first by a three-stage dry filter system.

Harboran exhibited a new closed-cabinet spray gun washer which can wash out two spray guns in under 30 seconds using solution al 5bar (70psi). Its list price is ,C450.

Motoplat of Dartford is marketing a Spanish-built heavy duty batteiy charger/boost starter. It has a continuous rating of 50A/24V for charging or 250A/24V for boost starting.

The CV534 costs ,E580, is hand portable and can be used at up to 70A on 12V batteries. It rapid charges for up to 60 minutes and can trickle Charge with 0-30A manual adjustment. Temperature sensors will cut the charging before battery damage occurs.

Hofmann launched its Geodyna 20L motorless wheel balancer for heavy CVs at the show. It is a hand spin unit complete with locating cones and lifting frame and has an

electronic display showing the amount and location of balancing weights needed.

Hofmann is developing a similar balancer for light vans.

One of the neatest hand tools on show was a manifold-stud extractor being marketed by Bainbridge Silencers for fastfit workshops. Designed for '/2" square driver use, including air impact guns, Bainbridge says it needs only 3.0mm of exposed metal to be able to unwind the toughest broken stud.

Lifetime guarantee

Apart from the inner jaws, the tool carries a lifetime guarantee and can be bought from any Bainbridge distributor.

Among the new entries in AP Lockheed's latest brake parts catalogue are pads and discs for Leyland Daf 45-series, lveco Ford Cargo and some Mercedes. The company was also displaying new catalogues for CDV and panel van brakes.
