Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a three-year campaign to reduce back strains and lifting-related injuries at work 'Lighten the Load' is the HSE's biggest campaign to date on a single issue.

In 1989/90 more than 30% of all reported injuries 54,0000 were related to lifting or manual handling. Most are caused by bad working practices, says Dr Tim Carter, the HSE's director of health policy and medical services.

"There is nothing 'normal' about being hurt at work." he says.

A booklet for employers and one for employees, is available free from the USE on (0742 752539) or (071221 0870).

An EC directive will legislate on the manual handling of loads by January 1993. Employers will have to avoid the need for manual handling where possible and take steps to reduce the risk of injury.
