Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An electric-powered PeugeotTalbot Express could go on sale in the UK early next year.

At 2,400kg GVW PeugeotTalbot claims an 800kg payload, compared with 1,070kg for an Express 250 diesel, because of the extra weight of the batteries. Body volume is also reduced, down from 6.5m for the standard Express to 6.0m'.

Maximum speed is said to be 90km/h (56mph) and the van takes about 12 seconds to reach 50km/h (31mph) from rest. Peugeot estimates that it will cover around 75km in city traffic in between charges. PSA launched the left-handdrive electric Express and Citroen C25 last year; 250 are already in use with Electricite de France.

Power comes from a pack of leak-proof conventional leadacid batteries, mounted below the load-bed floor. These supply current to an electric traction engine mounted transversely under the bonnet. Drive is transmitted to the front wheels via a conventional clutch and fivespeed gearbox.

The price will depend on whether buyers choose to lease or buy the battery packs.
