Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Using a lorry with faulty brakes and a defective tyre led to Reeds School of Motor

ing (HGV) being fined £300 by

Middleton, North Manchester magistrates.

The company admitted the charges but denied using another vehicle with a defective windscreen washer, horn, lights, and an unsealed tachograph during an HGV driving test on 1 September.

Defending, Richard Staunton said that the vehicle used on 1 September had been hired to the pupil and was under the supervision of the Department of Transport.

The prosecution dropped the charges.

Michael Church-Taylor, prosecuting, said that in October a police officer on duty at the Heywood Test Station pulled in the other vehicle. It was being driven by an employee of Reeds and when examined, defects to the vehicle's braking system and a worn tyre with broken and exposed cords were found.

Staunton said the tyres were regularly checked, and the fault was an oversight.
