III Leigh Environmental has opened a tyre crumbing plant at its Four Ashes site in Wolverhampton.
When fully operational the crumber will process up to 40,000 tyres a week, making 20,000 tonnes of rubber available for recycling in a full year.
Reclaimed material can be used in items such as mud flaps and carpet underlay. Leigh expects sales of reclaimed rubber to reduce the cost of the current shredding process: crumbing is expected to cost £2.00 per truck tyre if collected or £1.50 when delivered to the site.
