Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Details of a comprehensive planned maintenance scheme have just been sent to me by Shell-Mex and BP Ltd. The system shows how to plan one's maintenance, maintain the now necessary technical-legal records to comply with the latest transport regulations, and keep up a service check list covering items requiring servicing, with additional spaces for unlisted items. This sheet also lists the items checked at MoT testing stations.

The package includes instruction pads for use by supervisors and fitters, and drivers' report cards on which defects can be recorded.

The kit, with full operating instructions, can be obtained free of charge from Shell or BP technical services at any area or regional industrial office of Shell-Mex and BP, or from the Dublin office of Irish Shell and BP Ltd.

Making loads safer

A comprehensive range of equipment introduced by Dixon-Bate Ltd. is specially designed to overcome the problems of in-transit damage to loads in vehicle bodies. Known as Shorefast Cargo Control Equipment, it is designed on a modular system and will fit all vans and cargo containers.

Shorefast is appropriate for use with the more fragile commodities such as domestic appliances, electronic equipment, glassware and so on, and it also enables economies to be made in packaging.

The basic element of the system is a multislatted steel track, lengths of which can be fitted to the interior walls of the vehicle body. Each of the slots serves as a location point for any of various items in the Shorefast range which cater for lashing, shoring and decking applications.

Lashing assemblies consist of 2in. nylon webbing straps with automatic latch fittings for attachment to the track and with a tensioning buckle having a patent over-centre action. Telescopic, spring-loaded steel shoring bars have ends which engage readily in the track slots and serve both to support and subdivide the load. Adjustment over a wide range enables these bars to be used within different body widths.

Beam brackets also locate positively in the track and are designed to accept the ends of 4in. by 2in. timber transverse beams on which intermediate 0.75in. plywood decking can be laid. There is an alternative vertical track for use when a wide range of height variation is required for one or more extra decks. These beams can also be used for heavy-duty shoring pu poses.

The track can be welded, riveted or bolted in position according to the application. It can also be incorporated as part of the basic structure when fitted as original equipment and it can be applied to an existing body when it has the merit of providing additional reinforcement. Lining panels and flooring can be installed between the track members to present a flush surface.

Complete strap assemblies are available in three lengths and two lengths for shoring bar together cover all normal needs. Fittings for extending and for linking the straps are listed and special strap specifications can be supplied to order.

Floor sealer

A recent addition to the Quentglaze range of coatings for floors is 531/31 Sealer. Because of its affinity for water it is said to be especially suitable for sealing concrete floors. The sealer penetrates the concrete and reacts and combines with the water present so that the porous top layer of concrete is bound in a strong membrane; it cures by reaction with the moisture.

Not only are the mechanical properties of the surface improved and dusting eliminated but the resistance to chemicals such as solvents, oils and acids which normally erode concrete floors is also greatly enhanced. The material is applied by brush or roller and cures rapidly.

Hardy analysers

Following the successful introduction of the StenorHanson range of hand-held engine testing equipment, Stenor is now marketing two new items. These are the Stenor-Hanson Mark XV analyser and the Mark V exhaust gas analyser: they are said to complete the range of equipment needed to keep the modern petrol-engined vehicle in first-class tune.

The Mark XV analyser is suitable for 6 and 12V systems and four-, sixand eight-cylinder engines, positive or negative earth, with either transistorized or conventional ignition systems and will carry out all necessary tests. The Mark V exhaust gas analyser measures combustion efficiency and will enable the operator to determine the best carburetter setting. locate high petrol consumption and measure fuel/air ratio.

Both instruments are supplied with all necessary leads, terminals and other fittings and housed in steel cases specially designed for the units.

Easy assembly

A low-cost push-together aluminium plank section for commercial-vehicle body building —Alcan Quicklok—has been introduced by Alcan Industries. Primarily intended for the construction of dropsides, tailboards and sides and ends of tipper bodies, Quicklok can be used for any assembly (except flooring for which it is not suitable) that lends itself to being built from this type of plank section.

Quicklok planks are easy to assemble and lead to a reduction in labour costs. cutto-length planks are simply pushed together. To give a clean finish to the edges of assemblies. a capping section can be slipped over the planks at the top, bottom and sides and riveted into position.

Improved pallet

Following extensive user research, the design of the Storeload mobile pallet has been further improved, the main change being that the removable side walls (mesh) now incorporate a gravity "drop-lock" which provides automatic engagement with the base unit when the sides are fitted. Only a simple foot movement is needed to release the lock to allow the wall to be removed.

Smooth running of the pallet is achieved by two fixed and two swivel castors, 4in. in diameter and made of nylon. Corner brackets shield the castors from accidental damage and provide location for the side walls. Each bracket is bolted through to the base unit. Size of the base unit is 2ft Bin. long by 2ft 3in. wide and empty Storeloads can be dismantled and eight complete units contained within two.

Tie-down straps

Just added to the range of tie-down equipment from Irving Air Chute for securing loads on road transport vehicles are straps made of 5in.-wide nylon webbing.

Each strap is about 13ft long with a D-ring sewn into it as the two ends. The load is secured by threading rope through the D-ring and the use of tensioners is unnecessary.

Radiotelephones

A completely new series of fully transistorized radiotelephone equipment, with alternative models for frequency or amplitude modulation has been announced by Pye Telecommunications. The new range—called the Westminster Series—has been designed for mounting in all types of vehicles.

The versatility in the methods of mounting is stressed. The "remote" mounted model has a small control unit which fits easily under the dashboard of a vehicle allowing the main transmitter/receiver unit to be mounted in the most convenient position, while a locally operated transmitter/receiver is available for underdash mounting.

The transmitter power output of the series ranges from 5 to 15W with 1-10 channels. Various other features include anti-flutter squelch, and illuminated channel indicators.

Operating normally from a standard 12V battery, small weatherproof converters for 6 or 24V operation are available. The frequencies covered by the Westminster Series appropriate for cars, vans or lorries are between 25 and 174 MHz in 10 bands.

Auxiliary diesel

A new Bamford single-cylinder direct-injection auxiliary diesel engine is of the slow-speed type and develops its maximum power of 10 bhp at BOO rpm. Known as the Z4/10 it has a bore of 5in. and a stroke of 6in., while the compression ratio is 1 6.7 to 1.

Features of the unit include aluminium-tin crankshaft bearings, a removable wet cylinder liner and screened inlet valve. Both the governor and fuel pump are totally enclosed. The overhead valve gear is lubricated by oil mist.

Tags for corrosives

Inexpensive identification tags for marking tanks, pipes and valves and any other items exposed to corrosive liquids and atmosphere are being marketed by Bunting Electric Co. Ltd.

The tags are made of 22 s.w.g. titanium sheet supplied with Sin, titanium wire. There are various shapes available; two typical ones are 3in. by lin. with rounded ends and a circular shape measuring lin. diameter. Marketed by: Bunting Electric Co. Ltd., Hall Street, Birmingham 18.

Fork-lift sideloader

The Henley Forklift Co, Ltd. have announced a fork-lift sideloader with a capacity of 5 tons at 241n. load centres which is known as the Mercury and is additional to the cornpany's 4 ton sideloader. Plans are in hand for producing a 25-ton and a 30-ton sideloader.

In common with the 4-ton machine the 5-tonner is fitted with a Ford diesel developing 71 bhp at 2,500 rpm and power is transmitted through a Twin-Disc torque convertor to a constant-mesh gearbox having two duplex clutch packs which provide two forward and two reverse ratios. Girling hydraulic brakes with vacuum servo are fitted to all the wheels. The radiator and oil cooler are flexibily mounted.
