Spray adhesive

cLAIMED to be the only adhesive of its type which can be applied with a low air-pressure spray gun, a cheap adhesive has been announced by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. Ltd. Suitable for application to glass fibre, polystyrene and polyurethane foams, felt, cork and other lightweight insulating and cushioning materials, it is known as 3M Insulation Adhesive 34.

Overspray is almost invisible and this saves time in cleaning-up operations. The adhesive is also recommended for lap-seaming facing materials such as aluminium foil, coated refrigeration paper and Kraft paper and for edge-sealing low-density insulation materials.

A long "open time" allows application to large areas, and the adhesive also provides a fast strength build-up, thus permitting the insulation to be applied immediately.

If required, the adhesive can be applied to any clean base surface by brush and roller. A similar type of adhesive, 3M Spray Adhesive 77, is available in an aerosol can. Made by: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. Ltd., 3M House, Wigmore Street, London WI.

ARANGE of four MIG (metal inert gas) and three TIG (tungsten inert gas) gaswelding models is now available in this country from Messer Griesheim Ltd. and it is claimed that they offer a 40/50 per cent saving in terms of time and labour compared with more conventional equipment.

Smallest model in the MIG range, the Minimat, is a 150 amp. compact portable plant designed for welding thin sheets of steel, shielded by carbon dioxide, which is capable of welding sheet of h in. to Ain.

A 200 amp. model, the Argomat 204, is a compact unit with built-in wire feeder for short-arc and spray-arc welding, using argon, mixed gas or carbon dioxide, which can weld with steel wire with diameters from 0.8 mm.

Known as the Argomat 303 a slightly larger water-cooled unit is designed for welding heavier sheet and root runs, and completing the MIG range, the Argoinat 503, 420 amp. machine is operationally similar to the smaller 303 model but has a greater capacity.

In the TIG range, the Miniwig 130 is a portable welding attachment that converts any d.c. power source normally used for coated-electrode welding into a tungsten inert-gas welder and is suitable for welding mediumand high-alloy steels, copper and copper alloys, nickel alloys and pure or alloyed aluminium.

Completing the TIG range, the Argowig WHG 200 (a.c.) and the Argowig GHG 200 (dc.) models feature an air-cooled handwelding torch (the AL 220)fitted with ceramic high-impact caps. With a minimum rating of 200 amp., the 200 series is designed for welding all metals with a thickness up to 4 mm. in one pass.

Made by: Messer Griesheim Ltd., 43/45 Knights Hill, London SE27.
