chief witness of an old-established FEOldham excursion and tours operator told the North-Western Traffic Commissioners in Manchester on Tuesday that it had sought no extension of its licences in 10 years—nor lodged any objections.
Its gradual increase in business was due to a popular following and to the introduction of coaches with a bigger seating capacity.
He was Mr. E. K. Healey, licensing manager of Pleasureways (1955) Ltd., which applied to vary 15 excursions and tours licences relating to Manchester, Wigan, Preston, Chorley, Glossop, Leigh, Blackburn, Accrington, Nelson, Ashtonunder-Lyne, Rochdale, Warrington and Bolton.
The variations include an extension of the period of operation from 30 picking-up points.
To the whole or part of the applications the objectors are Florence Motors Ltd., Smiths' Tours (Wigan) Ltd., W. Robinson and Sons (Great Harwood) Ltd., Batty Holt Touring Services Ltd., Happiway Tours, (Manchester) Ltd. and Spencer Tours (Manchester) Ltd., represented by Mr. J. Booth, and Ribble Motor Services Ltd., represented by Mr: F. D. Walker.
Objections lodged by the North Western Road Car Co. Ltd. and East Kent Road Car Co. Ltd. were withdrawn subject to an agreed amended vehicle allowance being acceptable to the Commissioners.
For Pleasureways, Mr. G. P. Crowe said the proposed changes in picking-up points was the result of demolition or police representation.
The pattern had changed from years ago when all cotton trade employees took their holidays at the same time and licences were restricted accordingly.
The applications would not affect the objectors to any great extent. It could be said they had benefitted from Pleasureways' lethargy.
The hearing is likely to take several days.
