IMPORTANT cost savings will benefit the agricultural industry in the West Country if lorry payloads are increased, Transport Secretary David Howell told a Plymouth audience.
Inaugurating work on the new route for the A38 trunk road in Plymouth, Mr Howell said: "The Transport of bulk goods such as fertiliser and fuel to farms, and produce and livestock to their markets, will be more efficient. Independent farmers, particularly those in the south-west who are furthest from their markets, will reap the financial rewards."
He said that £1.5bn savings could be made over the next decade by raising the payload of our lorries towards those of our European competitors. In the south-west, over 30 new bypasses are planned for the next few years. "I am determined to keep up this momentum, and to press on with our measures to make lorries safer and quieter," Mr Howell said.
