THE question of providing accommodation for returning coach passengers holding period tickets was raised by an application before the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, at
Leeds, last week. R. Barr (Leeds), Ltd. (incorporating Wallace Arnold Tours, Ltd.), sought the renewal of a licence for a daily express service from Leeds to Bridlington, via Scarborough
and Filey. Variations requested included an increase in the maximum number of vehicles on certain days.
Mr. T. Hick, for the applicant, said that the increase in the number of vehicles was required for the accommodation of period-booked passengers making the return journey. R. Barr (Leeds), Ltd., had had to restrict the number of passengers on the outward journey, because of the number making the return trip.
Giving evidence, Mr. Robert Barr said it had been found that the service, a.; at present operated, was unbalanced.
For East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., and the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., which opposed the application, Mr. W. R, Hargrave said that the applicant company's difficulty in accommodating returning passengers was a common experience, particularly in the case of express services to seaSide resorts, and it was dealt with in a variety of ways. The application, stripped of its varnish, was for permission to pick up passengers on the outward journey with vehicles which normally would go out empty to pick up returning passengers. It was without precedent.
Mr. Hargrave added that there were services to Scarborough and Bridlington run by other concerns, and there was no evidence that anypassenger had not been accommodated by some operator. The Commissioners reserved their decision.
