• Cavewood, the UK arm of French haulage giant Geodis, has signed a "strategic partnership" with German freight forwarding group Cargoline.

The move is believed to be a response to the loss of lucrative German work after rival DFDS Transport bought into Cavewood's former partner Elix.

Ironically, DFDS and Cargoline also used to work together until the new relationship was announced earlier this month. And to add a further twist to the tale. Geodis is also a shareholder in Elk and handles the France-to-Germany side of the groupage operation.

Robin Parr-Davies, spokesman for Geodis UK, stresses that it is not a question of second best: "You could say that we have the best of both worlds as we now have agreements with Germany's two biggest groupage networks. We can now offer our UK customers a much better service in Germany through Cargoline."

Rene Falch Olesen, divisional managing director for DFDS Transport, says DFDS dropped Cargoline because it did not offer enough international coverage. He adds: "Geodis had to go out and find a solution and what was suddenly available was Cargoline."
