new manufacturer-backed scheme to boost used truck sales. Anybody who drives an old truck of 16 tonnes and above into a Scania depot will be allowed at least £2,000 against a Scania Approved Used Truck, no matter how decrepit his existing vehicle, and no matter what make.
"It's going to help us bring home to people the benefits of buying one of our approved trucks," says Southway Scania managing director Roger McCarthy. "It will help us persuade them to come and look at what we've got to offer. "We've found that demand for used Scanias is increasing anyway," he continues. "There's a flight to quality, and used Scania prices are holding up very well."
Does that mean there's a market for the low-powered Pcab day-cab tractor units favoured by so many of the big fleets? McCarthy believes there is, although some traders and analysts beg to differ. "They're being put to work on local distribution runs or on short-term contracts," he contends.
He says that 3-Series values don't seem to have been harmed by the launch of the 4-Series.
"Models with the Streamline cab are still selling very well, and even the values of five to seven-year-old Scanias don't seem to have dropped away too greatly," he says. Scania Approved Used Trucks come with a full service history, receive a 68-point check, are serviced before they are sold, and are covered by a three-month powertrain warranty.
