THE GOVERNMENT has given seven-month honeymoor period to hauliers replacing theil 32.5 tonne lorries for fitting side guards to their trailers, anc other classes of vehicle have been exempted from side anc rear guard requirements.
Originally sideguards to all 31 tonners were to have been fine( by May 1, but following repre sentations from operators Transport Secretary Davi( Howell last week laid an orde amending the sideguard propo sals.
However, the relaxation first revealed in CM — will or& apply to replated lorries that an not operating above the presen limit. From January 1 next year lorries plated above 32.5 tonne: will have to have sideguards.
Under the proposals, the re quirennent for sideguards to b. fitted to existing semi-trailers i limited to those with a max: mum gross weight exceedinâ– 26,000kg.
Low-loaders with deck height below 750mm, car transporter and temporarily importe: foreign semi-trailers are to b. exempted from the new require ment.
Concrete mixers, temporaril. imported foreign semi-trailer and lorries where the rear floe forms part of a tail-lift are als: being exempted from the rear guard requirements.
