LONDON TRANSPORT, the University of London and the Chartered Institute of Transport are jointly organising a conference including a programme of papers, syndicate discussions and visits which will examine the future challenges of urban transport planning, finance and operations.
General manager of the Gothenburg public transport system Curt M. Elmberg will be one of the main speakers with his talk "Harnessing the new technology". He will discuss developments in energy conservation and technological advances likely to affect public transport operation.
Other speakers will be Greater London Council chief transport planner David Bayliss, who will talk on "A transport strategy for cities", and London Transport Executive member lan Phillips, who will discuss "A stable approach to public transport finance."
These speakers will be followed by David Quarmby and Tony Ridley, managing directors of London Transport's bus and Underground businesses, Scott Hellewell of South Yorkshire PTE, Malcolm Buchanan of Colin Buchanan and Partners and Nick Lester, chairmandesignate of the London Transport Passengers Committee.
The conference will be held at the University of London on September 20-22.
