The Government says that the scheme will relieve the congested M5 and M6 in the West. It includes plans for bypasses in Kidderminster, Stourbridge and Wolverhampton to be upgraded to make a 72km motorway. Several different routes are being considered to carry an estimated 70,000 vehicles a day by 2003. The decision on the preferred route is expected next spring.

Exhibitions outlining these proposals, which would encircle the West Midlands by the 1990s, will tour the region for the next 16 weeks. The Government and local authorities have had thousands of public objections to the scheme.
