• Freight and property group LEP increased pre-tax profits by 25% to £11.1 million in 1987, thanks partly to a strong performance by its distribution subsidiary Swift Transport, which LEP took over in 1985.
Northampton-based Swift, which runs 390 vehicles from 11 depots, specialises in automotive component distribution. Another arm, LEP International, operates sub-contracted loads on trailers from Dover through Europe.
The group's turnover rose from £891 million to £939 million. Freight forwarding represents most of this, and now the company will adopt computers to increase margins, says chairman John Reed.
