• The European Commission has said it will not challenge the London Lorry Ban requirement for air-brake silencers on trucks using the capital.
The decision shatters hopes by the trade associations that the Commission might use its powers to over-ride last year's House of Lords judgement in favour of the London Boroughs Transport Committee.
The Lords rejected claims by the Freight Transport Association and Road Haulage Association that demanding silencers went beyond the normal legal powers of a local authority. From 1 August all hauliers using London at nights and weekends will have to have silencers installed.
