Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Securicor Omega Express has scooped £30m worth of extra business since it took over the i45m customer base of departing US giant Federal Express which closed most of its UK operation this spring.

"We did much better than we dared hope," says Paul Clifton, Securicor's newly appointed general manager sales, adding he was a little "selective" in which ex-FedEx customers were taken on. But he says Securicor received a firstclass reception from customers it did approach.

Securicor has taken on 500 FedEx staff and drivers to service the new work — 200 more than it anticipated at the time of the announcement in March (CM 19-15 March). It has also bought 350 FedEx vehicles.

The remaining £15m of FedEx business has been hotly contested. Parcelforce this week claimed to have picked up £.4m of it while Business Post recently said it had benefited to "the tune of £500,000".

Among FedEx staff joining Securicor are two sales appointments headhunted by Clifton. Ray Briggs, formerly global sales manager at FedEx, becomes Securicor's senior national accounts manager. Nick Wihl joins as deputy area sales manager, controlling Securicor's 30strong South East sales force.

FedEx retains 800 staff at six depots in the London area carrying parcels within the M25 ring.
