• US manufacturer Navistar is to use a CFC-free refrigerant in all International truck air conditioning systems. CFCs in refrigerants have been blamed for damage to the ozone layer. The company will use ICI KLEA and Du Pont SUVA instead of the Freon brand used previously. El Navistar begins production of a mechanically controlled 7.6litre smokeless diesel engine in September. Using low sulphur fuel, the 157kW (210hp) chargecooled engine will meet US 1994 emissions regulations without electronic controls or exhaust gas treatment.
