Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Exhibit :—One Four-ton Chassis ; One Four-ton Tilt Van ; and One Four-cylinder, 30-38h.p. Engine.

The splendid record which was put up by the "Hanford " vehicle during the R.A.C. trials should attract many visitors to the stand of J. and E. Hall, Limited, of the Dartford Ironworks, Kent. The Saurer machine (Switzerland), which is the parent of this splendid chassis, had already established a reputation for efficiency and reliability before the patents were taken up by this English company, which concern has done much to improve on the previous existing record.

The design of the machine is practically standardised, but it is interesting to note that, since the chassis was last exhibited, the Dartford company has made two alterations. One of

these is the fitting of Butler's patent front axle, consisting of two stampedsteel stub ends, complete with steering pivots, which are securely riveted into the ends of the axle bed; the latter is built up of two pieces of rolled steel, of channel section, and the whole construction forms a light but extremely strong axle. The other is the disappearance of the old channel-steel frame, with its deep flitch plate, which was one of the distinctive features of the " Hallford " vehicle, for this has been superseded by a new frame of pressed steel. The depth of section, at the point of the maximum bending moment of the frame, still remains the same, but the side members now gracefully taper off fore and aft, and the forward ends are curved to receive the dumb-iron extensions. These are carefully fitted, and are securely riveted to the frame members.

This company has now decided to cease fitting the air brake which has, so far, been one of the features of the " Hanford " engine, This will, of course, tend towards greater simplicity, and lower prime cost. The advantages which could be obtained by its use were rarely utilised, except by most experienced drivers.

In addition to the finished chassis, which, by the way, is an extremely suitable one for Metropolitan public-service vehicles, a separate engine is also exhibited, and the courteous representatives of J. and E. Hail, Limited, will be pleased to demonstrate the splendid features of this engine to any interested visitor to the show.

A four-ton tilt wagon, which has been built to the order of Carter, Paterson and Company, Limited, for its express service, is also exhibited by this maker.
