Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Padiham U.D.C. is applying to the Local Government Board for authority to purchase a new motor fire-engine.

The wife of Chief-officer Bullmore, of the Letchworth Brigade, collected the necessary money to allow the purchase of a motor fire engine to be completed.

Southampton Town Council has refused to pass a motion forbidding the use of any of its fire applianees outside the borough unless with the consent of the Council, by 29 votes to 16.

Oxford threatens to be over-supplied with motorbuses. The dispute between the conflicting local interests appears to us to be far from placed upon a satisfactory or permanent basis at the moment.

Sir John Berm, at last week's meeting of the L.C.C., made a fruitless effort to reverse certain of the recommendations of the General Purposes Committee, to which recommendations we gave publication last week (page 458 ante).

A company is in formation, in Middlesbrough, under the title of The Motor Transport Co., Ltd., with a capital of £25,000. The object in view is to establish motorbus services between Middlesbrough., Stockton and the Hartlepools, and also to cater for char-a-banes parties in Cleveland and South-east Durham.

We published in our issues of the 4th and 11th December particulars of applications to Parliament, in the coming Session, for powers to purchase and run motorbuses. Additional applications -have been made by the Birkenhead, Birmingham, Bolton, Cleckheaton and Glasgow Corporations, as regards motorbuses, whilst the Aberdeen Corporation favours trolleybuses.

We observe that the " Sheffield Daily Telegraph" of the 23rd inst quotes cne of our leading articles of last week, in respect of the intentions of the Sheffield City Council to acquire extended motorbus powers. This well-known 'daily newspaper fully endorses our comment, and takes the view that the poll of the ratepayers will result in a like public ,expression of opinion.

New Registrations.

Southport Motors,. Ltd., with an authorized capital of 110,000 in ES shares, to carry on the business of motor char-b.-banes and motoreab proprietors, garage keepers, etc.

The Rochdale Carriage Co. (1914), Ltd., with an authorized capital of £5000 in £2 shares, to take over the assets and liabilities of the Rochdale Carriage Co., Ltd:, with its registered offices at 12, Lower Tweedale Street, Rochdale.

The receipts of the National Steam Car Co., Ltd., for the. week ended the 2,1st January, 1911, were 13377. This shows an increase of £1348 over the corresponding period of last year.

The receipts of the Tramways (M.E.T.) Omnibus Co., Ltd., for the week ended the rth January, 1914, were £7746, and for the Gearless Omnibus Co., Ltd.., 2430. These show a decrease of £520 and £74 respectively against previous week.

Yet another coristry service of motorbuses is to be provided by Messrs. T. Standen and Sons, of Sittirigbourne, Kent. These owners are adhercuts of the Dennis type, following their early experiences with a chassis of the same make. which has been in uSe for more than 12 months without a breakdown of any kind. A fourth Dennis vehicle has now been ordered by Messrs. Standen.

The Basford R.D.C. is uneasy in respect of the lack of up-to-date fire appliances. iNott,ingham City Council recently decided not to allow its brigade to attend fires in country districts, and the local Farmers Unions are much perturbed in cansequence. Future action has been referred to the special Works Committee of the

Basford and we understand that the iNottitigham branch of the Farmers Union will prosecute the matter further.

The Amsterdam City Council has ordered five cedes motor fire-engines.

The Eastern Distria Canimitto.e, of the Ross Comity Council intends to purchase a motor ambulance, and this will be kicated at Tale,

We learn that W. and G. du Cros, Ltd., has instruced Bruhn's Taxameter, Ltd., to fit the whole of its motorcab fleet with Bruhn recorders. These recorders present, at the end of a day's run, graphic indications of exactly how each mile has been covered, and each hour spent, by the vehicle, as regards pace, stoppages, etc.

Tilling-Stevens for Folkestone.

Messrs. Youngs and Old, of the Shorncliffe Station Garage, Cheriton Road, Folkestone, have decided to use the latest type of TillingStevens petrol-electric chassis, for their extended services at Folkestone, following the acceptance of their proposals by the Folkestone Corporation. It is not settled, we understand, whether the bodies will be single-deckers or double-deckers.

Fire Brigade Horses for Sale.

The Bradford fire brigade will, on the 12th prox., dispose by auction of the remainder of its horse equipment. Six horses will go under the hammer, along with two steam fire-engines, a chemical fire-extinguisher, a combination chemical fire-extinguisher and fire-escape. two escape under-carriages, a dogcart, an exercise wagonette, and sundry harness, stable fittings, etc. Total reliance will in future, be placed upon motor fire-engines.

Bradford was the first city to purchase a Dennis turbine fire-engine, and that departure, taken in conjunction with subsequent orders for Dennis turbine fire-engioes, has brought about the 'above-quoted decision. Leeds City Council has bought a Green motor refuse-removal wagon, at 2425.

The South Shields Corporation has been recommended to link up the borough boundary with outlying districts, with a system of electric, motorbuses.

The Borough of Todmorden is inviting tenders for the supply of a petrol-driven motor fire-engine and a petrol-driven motor ambulance-see page 46 of advertisements.

Newton Abbot U.D.C. has instructed its Lighting Committee to go fully into the question of pm-chasing a motor fire-engine or motor lorry, for fire-brigade purposes.

A Turn for Leylands.

The L.C.C. is recommended by its Fire Brigade Committee to accept the tender of Leyland Motors, Ltd., for the supply of 12 motor fire-engines at £865 each, and 11 motor escape-vans at £640 each.. The company's tender is also recommended for acceptance, at £400, for the supply of a chassis for a motor tender which is to be used for instructional purposes.

St, Paul's and Vibration.

A special report from Dr. R. T. Glazebrook, F.R.S., the director of the National Physical Laboratory, is the result of experimental work that was executed under the superintendence of an Advisory Committee, which included Sir John Wolfe Barry, Mr. Horace Darwin, Professor Milne, Mr. A. Mallock, and Professor Unwin. It is now demonstrated beyond disputation that the small vibrations due to motorbus and other traffic are in no way injurious to the structure of St. Paul's Cathedral. Thus does yet another of the arguments of parties who are hostile to the motorbus receive its quietus.

Essex Road Improvements.

We now supplement our brief announcement of the 8th inst (page 418 ante) re road improvements in Essex. The scheme applies to about 150 miles of road, at a cost of £300,000. This expenditure will be spread over five years ; the Road Board will contribute 2125,000 towards it as a grant, and will lend another £75,000, free of interest, repayable in five years. The details of this programme, so far as owners are concerned, are sufficientlyconveyed in the list of roads annexed : —

(1) From London to Stratford St. Mary (Suffolk) being the main road from the county boundary at West Ham to Ipswich, passing through portions of the urban districts of East Ham, Romford, Chelmsford, Witham and Coltheste-r ; (2) From London to Newmarket and Cambridge, being the main road from the county boundary at Lea Bridge, passing through portions of the urban districts of Leyton, Walthamstow, Woodford and Saffron Walden ; (3) From London to Southend, being the main road from the county boundary at East Ham (Anne Boleyn's Tower), passing through portions of the urban districts of East Ham, Barking and ; (4) From Epping Forest to Chelmsford, being the branch road from London to the East Coast, leaving the Epping new road at Epping Plain, and terminating at its junction with the London to Ipswich main road in the borough of Chelmsford at Springfield Road Corner, High Street, Chelmsford ; (s) From Colchester to Hat- wich, being the main road from London to Harwich, commencing at its junction with the London to Ipswich main road in East Street, Colchester, terminating in Harwich at the end of the existing main road known as Church Street.

Thus, again, is our policy of "pay the tax and see that you get value," endorsed. Many users of vans and omnibuses will look forward with ple,asure to the completion of the work.
