WESTERN EUROPE requires nr 1,000,000 more lorries by 1952, according to plans made under the European Recovery Programme. It is expected that in the forthcoming fiscal year more than 840,000,000 will be earmarked for the rehabilitation of road transport in that territory.
The Economic Co-operation Administration regards the post-war recovery of Western Europe's transport system as exceptionally „rapid. It states that the Nethirlands now has about 34,000 lorries, compared with 28,000 before the war, although in 1945 it had only 7,000 goods vehicles with which to carry the traffic essential to its economic recovery.
France also operates more lorries than before the war, largely because of the high rate of production last year.
A1though the increase in Western Europe's goods-vehicle fleet is encouraging statistically, says E.C.A., much of the rolling stock is worn out or obsolete and must be replaced. As a result, even with increased production, the full impact of E,C.A. assistance will not be felt until the replacement programme is completed.
USE OF TRACTORS ON ROADS
THE temporary Order permitting tractors with narrow-rim front steering -wheels to use the roads is to be continued until December 31 this year. Announcing this in the House of Commons, recently, Mr. J. Callaghan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, added that the Order would not be extended beyond that date.
