Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE rolling of screw threads 1 on various parts of motor vehicles, such as shafts and, particularly, wheel studs, is gaining many adherents, not only for the reason that it is an extremely rapid operation, but that it provides a much better and stronger thread, because the grain of the metal flows instead of being cut. We would not be surprised to see the process developed to cover almost all parts which lend themselves to it. At the Dennis works it is used even for the main roller shaft of the company's well-known lawn mower.

Driver's Action Saves E were struck by the devo People and Bus from lion to duty of the crew Flood . . . . of a Midland "Red" bus,

an account of which we

saw recently In the Nuneaton district there are sornctiines floods, and one bitterly cold day -when it was snowing heavily a bus ran into water some 3 ft deep under a bridge and there stuck. There were .several passengers, including a young child. The driver waded out, walked a mile to a telephone and reported to the police, leaving his conductor to console the occupants. Then he called for the help of a farmer with a tractor. This machine was, how-ever, forced to stop some 15 ft. away. The driver again waded through the water and fixed a tow rope, this operation having to be repeated because the rope

broke on the first occasion. Eventually the vehicle was towed out backwards and proceeded thus for half a mile with the soaked driver steering, although he almost collapsed with the cold. Such action merits the highest praise.

This is in line with present-day normalization in the French industry, the object being to leave the heavier products to the specialists concerned. Incidentally, Hotchkiss has made a real success with its policy of producing a single model. This is also a 2-tonner, which is coming off the line in large numbers.

Complaints . . standard of hotel accommo dation and catering facilities offered to passengers. Sometimes, the level promised by personal inquiry is not maintained, and there have been instances of over-charging, even to the extent of varying prices within the same establishment for different parties. In an effort to remove this dissatisfaction, the Passenger Vehicle Operators Association is trying to prepare a list of recommended hotels and catering establishments. As a first step, members who operate extended tours, prolonged contract journeys, or even long-distance express services involving the use of hotels or restaurants, are being asked to supply details of any accommodation that they can recommend. The National Council of the Association has approved in principle the formation of a special functional group of such members to look after their, interests.

Successful Experiment EXPERIMENTS have been with Mud Flaps for undertaken at Fort Buses . . Dunlop for the Birmingham

and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., with the object of reducing the splashing of mud „by and on to buses. As a result, 50 new buses for the famous Midland " Red " concern, under construction by the Metropolitan-Carnmell Carriage and Wagon Co., Ltd., are being equipped with mud flaps fitted all round the edge of each platform. The flap is attached to the under side at 9-12-in, intervals, by mild-steel 4-in, by angle brackets, using 5/16-in, bolts and nuts with large washer plates on the outer side of the flap. It haS been found that these flaps keep the platforms much cleaner.
