SOUTHAMPTON City Transport general manager and former Bus and Coach Council president Bill Lewis has opted for early retirement.
Lewis (55) has spent 28 years involved with running public transport as a public crvice and is a firm believer in public service, with financial support if necessary, as the main criterion for running public transport.
He told CM that he found it difficult to contemplate a switch to a mainly commercial system.
He will however remain with Southampton until April and is actively involved in the groundwork for establishing the new municipally-owned Southampton bus company to run its 148 double-deck buses.
