'TRAVELLING facilities between 1 Manchester and Butlins holiday camp at Pwllheli were criticized by fnernbers of the public when they supported an application by North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., at Manchester on Tuesday. The company wanted to operate express services to the camp, with picking-up points at Fate on Saturdays only from Whitsuntide to the last Saturday in September, and a vehicle allowance of two. The Commissioners reserved their decision until they had heard a counter-application by. the objectors.
Mr. W. Woolley, North Western assistant traffic manager, said that throughout 1960 they had kept a constant check on the number of people who would be likely to use the service, and these amounted to some 450. Booking for the 1961 season at Butlins began the first week in December, and obviously people would not arrange a holiday until they were sure of their means of transport.

NEW PERKINS INDUSTRIAL ENGINE
A N industrial version of the recently introduced Perkins Six 354 directinjection oil engine has been introduced, and will receive its first general showing at the Public Works Exhibition, to be held at Olympia from November. 14 to November 18 inclusive. For its industrial application the Six 354 has a rating of 112 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m. when equipped with a hydraulic governor, and at this rating its peak torque output is 260 lb.-ft. at 1,450 r.p.m.
When fitted with a mechanical governor, the engine is rated to develop 85 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m.for continuous operation (to BS 649:1958) and 234 lb.-ft. torque at 1,300 r.p.m. Fully equipped, the engine weighs 1,100 lb. and, following usual Perkins practice, it will, be offered in stage-by-stage form up to a complete power pack.

operator was building up a flourishing business and was committed to a high expenditure, he encountered a tragic series of misfortunes. This was said by the Registrar, Mr. J. L. C. Dilcock, at Walsall Bankruptcy Court on Tuesday after Alexander Thomson had admitted a deficiency of £4,559.
Adjourning the examination, the Registrar said he had every sympathy for Mr. Thomson. The misfortunes were said to be the death of his wife; a serious deterioration in his eyesight; and then his being involved in a motor accident.
Road Research Test Track Opened
WJFIEN the Road Research Laboratory's VV new Crowthorne test track was shown to the Press on Tuesday, Sir William Glanville, director of road research, said that the track, which had been laid out and designed by the Department of Scientific and Industrial 'Research, was unique.
The track was described in the April 22 issue of The Commercial Motor, and cost about /500,000 to build. Speeds of up to 100 m.p.h. can be reached, and an electronic vehicle-guidance system is to be installed experimentally. The varying effects of street lighting and road-surface colour can be studied. Skidding and brake-efficiency experiments are to be conducted.
LONDON TRANSPORT STREAMLINE OPERATIONS
FOLLOWING the retirement this _ week-end of Mr, J. R. Garwood, divisional superintendent, Central Road Services, South East division, London Transport has announced a reduction of their operating divisions from four to three.
Under the control of Mr. J. B. Burnell, operating manager, Central Road Services, they will be known as the West. East arid South divisions. North of the Thames. a line running northwards from Aldwych to Potters Bar separates the East and West divisions, while the South division operates south of the river.
Divisional superintendats are, respectively, West—Mr. A. E. Flack (Cricklewood), East—Mr. M. J. McCoy (Manor House), and South—Mr. F. J. Lloyd (Camberwell).

ciated Road Transport Contractors (A.R.T.C.0.) is to be held next February, and at the same time it is hoped to organize a traffic managers' conference. This was announced on Wednesday by • A.R.T.C.O.
A meeting of the board has decided to circulate to members a series of bankto-bank rates which had been prepared by Mr. A. Cusick. A schedule of redelivery rates is to be reissued at the same time.
Mixed, Bag" for Mr. Quin
A SCOTTISH haulier, -John Nisbet, ri of 40 Church Street, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, asked the Scottish Licensing Authority, Mr. W. F. Quin, on
• Monday for permission to alter the conditions of his B licence, because Eyemouth harbour was being closed down for a year. The application was adjourned for him to bring a firm date of closing for the harbour.
Two tankers, one articulated and one rigid, were granted on an ordinary A licence to William Dobson (Edinburgh), Ltd., by the Authority, on Monday. Mr. Quin was informed that the vehicles were at present on a short-term licence for the Esso Petroleum Co., Ltd., which now proposed permanent use of the vehicles, owing to demand for fuel oil. Mr. Quin granted an extra rigid vehicle of 44,tons unladen weight to Alex McCracken, Inn, of Falkirk. The Authority was told that the firm originally had an eight-wheeler for the work, which was largely on brickwork sites, but it had proved too large.
They had then switched to a smaller vehicle, but found it could not cope with all the work. The present application sought to revert to the original position, but with two light vehicles in place of the eight-wheeler—the one vehicle already on licence and the second now applied for.
MORE ATILANTEAN COACHES
A FURTHER 12 " Gay Hostess 1--1 Leyland Atlanteans have been ordered by W. C. Standerwick, Ltd., for their coaching operations next season, said Mr. H. Bottomley, managing director, at Blackpool, last week. At• present the company have ordered 10 of these special-bodied vehicles for their motorway service to London. Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., the parent company, operate 15 more
