nNE of the earliest successful 1,--/attempts to stabilize haulage rates was the outcome of negotiations between the local Sub-area of A.R.O. and the ForeSt of Dean Collieries. As a result, schedules were drawn up in September, 1937, and these were published in The Commercial Motor dated September 24.
The Forest of Dean Colleries gave an undertaking that they would not ernploy any haulier who did not charge the full agreed scale Of rates. This was an important piiint, as rate-cutting had, up to then, been responsible for the cut-throat competition in the area. Since that time, rate-Cutting in this class of traffic has practically ceased, and all the hauliers. engaged in it are on amicable 'terms.
• Now, resulting from recent negotia'Lions, in the course Of which members of A.R.O. rep,resehted to the Collieries that 'considerable increases in coat of 'haulage had taken place, a neiv schedule has been agreed and is in force. The schedule, which is published herewith,shows an increase of approximately 20 per cent. on the rates formerly agreed;
