FACING a deficit of £122,000 next year, Wolverhampton Transport Department applied to the West Midland Licensing Authority for permission to increase fares. Objections were raised by a number of local authorities at the recent hearing of the case.
Mr. J. M. Gore, deputy town clerk, said that in the year 1948-49 a deficit of 131,000 had been suffered, whereas in previous years the undertaking had run at a profit. Wages had risen by 70 per cent, over pre-war levels and costs of motorbuses had increased by 126 per cent, and of trolleybuses by 110 per cent.
The proposals were for a reduction in the length of the 1W. fare stage, and an addition of .1d. to fares between 24.1 and 5d. and a Id. to fares over 5d.
