How right are the sentiments expressed by Mr D. R. Wood, managing director, Tapley Meters Ltd (CM June 13).

I regularly lecture at one particular college in London on Road Freight Transport, Passenger Transport Operation, and Motor Trade Administration, and in all three subjects the necessity of efficient brakes on vehicles as well as the testing and servicing of them, is thoroughly hammered home.

Many times 'have I found myself reiterating some of the points made in Mr Wood's letter, and on many occasions students have put the question —" wiry, if the law requires such high levels of braking standards, are not meters fitted lead some of us to bankruptcy. Even scant survival temporarily could prove in the long run extremely difficult ; particularly when one considers the enormous extra outlay for new vehicles these days. Renting or leasing ? lect always the best means of acquiring vehicles ; and in any event, no prudent organisation is going to lease or hire, without making stringent inquiries concerning the applicant's financial position, and in the light of the increasing everts of replacement vehicles, their requirements will be onerous. to vehicles as a safety preca:ution ? "

It would appear that the basic reason why tachographs are to be fitted to goods carrying vehicles, is primarily as a safety measure. Why not Chen a brake efficiency reading meter for similar purposes, and which would give the driver and operator, ready means of checking a vehicle's braking efficiency, particularly as by law they both are held responsible for the required standards of efficiency.

"Preventive maintenance" is "Safety First," so why should the driver not be given an early warping device !

B. A. THOMPSON, Barnet, Herts.

A small man, I have been reasonably 'successful in keeping most of my vehicles operating, but I have not and will not enter into a cutethroat war with anybody, It would only lead to disaster, Maybe I shall have to cut back a bit more before general trading conditions improve. I sincerely hope nolt, but since that silver lining is not yet apparent the threat exists and it's a worry, but in the long-teem there will be MOTE to worry about if I start slashing rates.
