A PROFIT is made by Ribble Motor Services in Carlisle—so why should the city's bus users subsidise the company's less profitable outlying areas? This is a question that the council's public works committee wants to take up with the Transport Minister.
And if the council agrees to send a five-man deputation to see the Minister it may be led by Ribble bus driver Walter Bell, in his capacity as committee chairman. Last week Mr Bell told his committee that it was scandalous that Carlisle was being asked to subsidise Ribble's less profitable outlying areas. Mr James Smith, recently retired Ribble inspector, is also on the committee; another member urged any deputation to press for a national rate for bus fares.
