D. A. S. Plastow, group managing director of Rolls-Royce Holdings Ltd, has been appointed to •the board of Vickers Ltd. His appointment is non-executive.

H. J. Cutler, managing director of H. .1. Cutler Ltd, the Poole haulier, has been presented with a certificate of life membership of the Road Haulage Association, only the ninth person to achieve this honour, Mr Cutler started in haulage with horses and carts, buying his first lorry in 1928. He joined the Commercial Motor Users Association, later Associated Road Operators, forerunner of RHA. He has served on the Association's governing body, its long-distance group, highways and traffic committees, and has been chairman of the local group transport association. The presentation was made by RHA southern area chairman H. W. Mould.

Colin Colvin, formerly manager of Doncaster Branch, North Eastern BRSL, has been appointed manager, Scunthorpe. Two other graduates. of a recent BRS man agement course have also been appointed branch managers NEBRS, Keith Gatenby, formerly assistant manager, Sheffield, becomes manager, Doncaster ; Len Minnikin, Darlington, manager— his previous position was assistant manager at Newcastle. Clive Nichols has been appointed manager Worksop 'branch after almost a year as acting manager, in succession to Bernard Hole who has retired.

Paul Hirons, 28, has been appointed marketing services manager of Seddon Atkinson Vehicles Ltd. He will head the market information department based rat the company's Oldham head office. Mr Hirons served a student aprenticeship with 13LMC Truck and Bus Division.

G. W. Quick Smith, Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Carmen, gave an address last week at St Stephen's Church, Wallbrook, EC2, to the late Henry T. Dutfield. Mr Dutfield was, in fact, a cockney, he said, born at East Smithfield, and in 1900 had joined 'his brother George in the family business, which become one of the largest haulage firms in Britain. A leading member of the London Cartage Association, he had become the first chairman of the Road Haulage Association for an extended three-year term; was a Fellow of the CIT; and at the time of his death president of the Transport Managers Club. Last year the Worshipful Company of Carmen, said Mr Quick Smith, had awarded Mr Outfield the title Father of the Company. David D. Sieff, 36, has been appointed part-time member of the Board of the National Freight Corporation for a further period of three years. Mr Sieff is a director of Marks and Spencer.

J. R. Elliott and S. L B. Skyrme have been elected as two of the vice-presidents of the Chartered Institute of Transport. Mr Elliott is head of transport, Metal Box Ltd, and Mr Skyrme is chief executive of the National Bus Company.

Douglas Daniel Gate, 50, has bean appointed deputy director of the Department of the Environmont's South Eastern Road Construction Unit at Dorking in succession to John Tiplady, who becomes director of the Eastern Road Construction Unit, Bedford.

M. Trevette, 30, becomes general manager of Cardiff City. Transport. Mr Trevette is currently district traffic superintendent, Stockport, Greater Manchester PTE.

Robin Jones, 36, traffic manager with Trent Motor Traction, becomes traffic manager of Midland Red in succession to John A. Birks, who moves to general manager, Southdown.

Obituary

We record with regret the death of Harry Clarke.

Mr Clarke, 77, in 1945 founded the family haulage business which became Clarke and Sons (Carriers) Ltd, of Lutterworth, Leics.
