Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The use of malleable castings has increased proportionately as the motor-vehicle industry has developed. This process, with its specific advantages actually only possessed by forgings and by castings separately and respectively, has achieved a special measure of success at the hands of automobile constructional engineer& Malleable castings are to-day very different productions from those which were available when, refla

tively a few years ago, this process first became a practicable one. It is now possible to employ highgrade castings with intricate contours in their construction, for purposes which previously would. only have admitted forgings, stampings, or built-up components.

When we were in Sheffield recently, we took the opportunity which had been offered to us of inspecting a comprehensive collection of malleable castings which has been made available to all interested parties by Mr. Hugh A. 0. Adrain, who is the British representative for the Societe Anonyme des 012 Acieriea ci-devant Georges Fischer, of Schaffhouse, Switzerland: His office is at 64, Fargate, Sheffield. It is claimed by Mr. Adrain that the material of which these castings are composed yields a tensile strength of 25 tons per square inch. From our own inspection we are able, without hesitation, to certify that the examples which Mr. Adrain has made available are very clean as to their skin. They are certainly well finished and appear to be accurate to a degree which one, of course, does not always secure in casting work.

The illustrations which we include are in themselves evidence of the fact that there is very little limit to the complication of the castings which can be effectively produced in this class of material. As to its toughness, distorted models on exhibition at the Sheffield offices are excellent testimony.

We learn from Mr. Adrain that he is able to offer quick delivery at reasonable prices, a distinct boon in these, trying times.
