sr Motorists were left open-mouthed this week as a huge 'mask' of film director Alfred Hitchcock was transported down the motorway from Co Durham to London. The 4.3m high by 5.2m wide sculpture, weighing around 18 tonnes. was destined for the site of the former Gainsborough studios in North London where the director made many of his films.
Hauling the load was Stanley firm Gallacher Bros. Boss Paddy Gallacher says: "We've carried other sculptures before but nothing quite like this. It took quite a bit of organising as it wasn't level so It was quite hard to load onto the trailer.
"That said we were pleased when the job was finished well and out of the way."
Andrew Shaw, sales director at Bonds Foundry, which made the sculpture, adds: "We use Gallachers all the time. They had the right kit for the job and they are quite close to the foundry so it was handy to have them keep coming up and seeing the progress we were making.
"They are Incredibly professional and could not have been more helpful on this job," he concludes.
