Citroen's van marketing team has been busy, introducing the first of a new breed of van to the UK as well as revealing the spec and pricing of the facelifted Berlingo and improving the terms of its van warranty.

Vans based on passenger cars have long been common on the Continent, but in the UK have largely been restricted to oftreaders and three-door hatchbacks. Citroen aims to plug this gap with the Xsara Enterprise.

Based on the existing Xsara five-door estate can the Enterprise is unashamedly targeted at the void created by the replacement of the Ford Escort van with the high-cube Transit Connect, which has left the sector occupied solely up to now by the Vauxhall Astra. Citroen admits to having little idea of the size of the potential market at present.

The 1,580kg GVW Xsara Enterprise was created by fitting opaque rear windows and a completely flat load floor. The loadspace is 1,660mm long by1.300nim wide, with

an internal height of 1195mm giving a volume of just over 1.5m3. The net payload of 5304 is kept away from the cabin by a standard quarter-height steel bulkhead, with an optional full -height mesh guard. Power is from the familiar 2.0HDi common-rail turbodiesel, producing 90hp and 2-1011m of torque.

The van shares the extensive specification of its passenger sibling, itself relatively generous. Four airbags. ABS/EBD, power steering, electric windows and RDS radio/cassette with remote display and column controls are included.

The Xsara Enterprise, together with the rest of Citroen's five-model van range, benefits from an enhanced warranty intended to appeal to both high and lowLi mileage operators.

Cover is now provided for either two years with unlimited mileage or three years with a 100,000-mile limit. The Xsara Enterprise will go on sale in January at a price, as yet unconfirmed but ''under £11,000'.
