• Nine lorry drivers, who were suspended by United Glass Ltd, St Helens, for refusing to deliver goods when it was foggy, have received the backing of the local branches of the TGWU.
Union officials have declared that it should be left to the drivers to decide whether or not they turn out in fog; they should be the judges of weather conditions, not the management.
Local branches of the TGWU made their declaration after a meeting of 43 shop stewards. They unanimously decided to introduce the policy to all firms in St Helens employing goods drivers.
