With a view to increasing the usetulness of the Motor Union, local solicitors have been appointed in various parts of the country, in order that members who are proceeded against for offences connected with the ownership or use of a motorcar may know to whom to apply for legal assistance, and also have an approximate idea of their liability for legal expenses. rhe solicitors appointed are those who are known to be experienced in motor cases. Annexed will be found the scale of fees chargeable in ordinary cases by the appointed solicitors, and also a list of the appointments so far made in five areas.

The scale of fees chargeable by appointed solicitors to members of the Union, which includes all members of the Motor Van and Wagon Users' Association, is as follows :For legal advice or assistance on a motor car case, one interview or one letter ... o 5 o For preparing case and attendance at Court within a three-mile radius of the solicitor's office in order to defend a

member, inclusive 3 3 0

For preparing case and attendance at Court within a radius of 50 miles, plus travelling expenses For preparing and conducting an appeal to Quarter Sesstons against a convic tion under the Motorcar Act (inclusive of counsel's fee, but exclusive of wit nesses' expenses, and, if unsuccessful, the taxed costs of the prosecution) ... 25 o o These are the fees which members are expected to pay in ordinary eases. lithe case is one involving special expenditure, the solicitor is under obligation to indicate at an early stage of the proceedings that the case is of such an exceptional character as to require special treatment. Mr. W. Rees Jeffreys, r6, Down Street, W., will be pleased to have recommendations from members of the Motor Union in respect of towns and districts not yet dealt with.
