Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Prestolite alternators which are of American origin are now being manufactured and marketed by Smiths Industries. Two versions are available-35 and 45amp output—and in both cases there are positive and negative earth versions. A 60amp model is also available for special applications.

Over 6,000 Prestolite alternators are made each day throughout the world. The design uses nine diodes with six in the rectification circuit and three auxiliary diodes to provide field excitation, allowing warning-light operation to be achieved without using a separate control unit.

A favourable power-to-weight ratio is said to be a feature of the alternators. Weight of the 35amp model is 7.5Ib with the figure for the 45amp, 9.51b. A kit to fit the components to most makes of vehicle for which they are suitable.

Made by: Smiths Industries Ltd., Motor Accessory Division, Oxgate Lane. London, NW2.

Price: Complete kit, 35amp £26; 45amp £28.
