• The GLC is to slow down its road programme by 10 years, it was announced on Wednesday. The cost of building London's motorway and secondary road network is now estimated at £1,440m—a 40 per cent increase. Most of Ringway One is not now due for completion until about 1995.
If the MoT sections of motorways are added, the total estimated cost could be in the region of £1,695m.
Mr. R. Vigars, GLC planning and transportation committee chairman, told a Press conference that if necessary traffic restraint would have to be increased to match the slowing down of the ringway programme.
The timing of the programme had been revised because of the Government's three per cent peg on capital spending.
