• Haulage contractors in South Wales and the West of England working for the Whitehead Iron and Steel Works, Newport, Mon., have made a joint demand for a 10 per cent increase in rates.
A previous application for an increase of 121 per cent was rejected by the Whitehead management, who, after asking to see an analysis of operators' cost increases, offered five per cent. This was not accepted by the operators. They did say, however, that they were prepared to absorb some of the cost increases but it was imperative that their charges should be increased by 10 per cent from February 1.
• British Road Services are known to have also made a comparable application in recent weeks.
