in Latest figures from the International Road Transport Union show that the cost of diesel in Britain has almost doubled in the past eight years, while petrol prices have increased by 110%.
The figures, which give fuel price details for 36 different countries, show that Britain's vehicle users have not benefited from North Sea Oil in the form of lower-than-average fuel prices.
As CM went to press on Tuesday night (Nov 18) the bulk price for commercial dery was expected to rise by 1.5 pence per litre (6.8 pence per gallon). Since 1978 the cost of diesel in Britain has increased by 97%. This is the fifth largest increase in the EEC. It compares with a 3% increase in the cost of diesel in West Germany, a 34% increase in the Netherlands, a 72% increase in Belgium and a 75% increase in Luxembourg.
Petrol prices in the UK have risen by 110% over the eight years from 1978, the fourth largest increase in the EEC. Only Greece (250% increase), Ireland (185%), and Italy (156%) have seen larger increases in petrol prices. West Germany enjoyed the smallest increase; just 15%.
