• About six years ago I wrote to another magazine and said then that I believed that the diesel engine would level Out at about 450bhp in 19871988.
Several engineers and a university professor wrote back and stated that in their opinion the diesel engine would only go past 350bhp in specialised vehicles, and that they could not see any normal everyday haulage-use vehicles with engines over 300 to 330hp, as fuel consumption would rule out their use in normal haulage tractors.
Well, here we are in 1986 and we have Mercedes, Iveco, Scania and Volvo who have said they now have 400bhp engines under development. All the above, except for Volvo, has 400bhp tractive units on the road and it is moving up towards 450bhp. We also have Gardner who says its LYT will go above 400. If this is a fact it had better move now and do battle with the opposition or Gardner is going to be left at the post again. The same applies to the Perkins RR350 series.
So come on Perkins and Gardner, let's move up a gear and produce the goods now Montgomery Westhoughton Lancashire
