Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Vehicle Systems Engineering (Suspensions) of Barking in Essex has developed a scaled-down version of its Silentride air suspension suitable for vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes GVW.

Although the prototype version has been fitted to a Ford 'D' series demonstrator, VSE says it can be adapted to fit most other chassis makes.

VSE expects it to be particularly attractive to UK minibus operators and believes it will withstand a 300 tilt test.

A smaller, lighter version, fitted on a Bedford CF ambulance chassis, is also undergoing evaluation with Kent and Surrey Health Authorities and the DHSS.

VSE has applied for a world patent for its small Silentride system, and it is discussing a possible manufacturing agreement with Turner and Neway in the United States. A major European vehicle manufacturer could also be attracted into taking up a licence.

The Silentride suspension has a trailing load arm which carries the air bellows, plus torque arms with bushed ends and a slider block providing a positive stop.

Roll stability is achieved by specifying suitable bushings, or alternatively a torsion bar can be used.

A 5.5 bar (80psi) working pressure is used for a fairly hard ride. The prototype unit is fitted with Dunlop bellows, although VSE says that Firestone or Goodyear air bags can be specified.

VSE says the Silentride axle can be installed either in front or behind the axle and it can be used with demount bodies.
