• Roger Dowsett, managing director of Dow Freight Services, has hit out at unfair competition to British haulage firms provided by Eastern European hauliers.

"They pay no road tax and their drivers earn about £40 a week", he says, "Compare that with our drivers who earn between £10,000 and £12,000 a year. In addition, it costs us £3,000 a year for road tax on a 38-tonne rig, No wonder the Rumanians can undercut us by 1,000 Deutschemarks a trailer to Turkey."

Dowsett claims his company's fleet operating in Eastern Europe has shrunk as a result of the competition but he says, "We certainly haven't given up on Eastern Europe. A manufacturer generally only uses Eastern hauliers once before coming straight back to us."
