Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LORRIES have an excellent road safety record which seldom hits the headlines. So said Road Haulage Association senior vice-chairman Ken Rogers when he spoke in Leicester yesterday (Friday).

"It is a distressing fact, and one that must be of concern to every lorry operator, that a large section of the general public believes that heavy lorries are dangerous and cause a considerable number of accidents, deaths and injury." He pointed out that there are 140 lorry (over 1.5 tons laden) accidents per million vehicle miles, against an average for all vehicles of 253. This is about half the figure for all road vehicles.

Mr Rogers went on to say that there has been a 40 per cent decline goods vehicle accidents between 1969 and 1977, against a 21 per cent drop in car accidents.

"Against the background of steadily improving accident figures of all classes of vehicles, heavy lorries are be-' coming safer at twice the rate of motor cars."
