Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Nissan has developed a seatbelt pre-tensioner designed to reduce the chance of injury in a frontal impact.

Incorporated in the belt retractor, the belt is pretensioned and locked in the event of an impact as usual. When the belt tension reaches a predetermined load, the shaft in the belt reel will twist to allow the belt to stretch.

The system will be fitted to a new car in Japan next Spring. It is not yet clear if the system will be offered on Nissan light CVs .
