DEPRESENTATIVES of six inde

pendent road transport associations covering goods haulage, pay., and ancillary users, met in Birminghain on September 13 to develop the plans of the new National Conference :of Road Transport Associations. Mr. E. B. Howes, of H.M.Iz., was elected to preside, andMr. J. S. Howarth; Amalgamated Horse and Motor Owners' Association (155, Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester), acted as secretary.

The latter reported a steady widening bf interest in the new Conference, which has sprung from realization by old-established local associations that full autonomy could be maintained quite economically but -effectively alongside a simple linking together for national purposes.

It was agreed that -the Conference should consist of organizations, not individuals or firms. They should retain full autonomy, but would confer at regular intervals through the medium of a Council, and each body should exercise only one vote. Associations-would refer to the Conference, for discussion in Council, matters: on which a wider range of 'opinion was sought or on which it was hoped corn, mon action could be taken. Such: matters.. should be . notified in writing at least 14 days before a _Council meeting.

The following tentative staternieit of -ebjects of the Conference ways approved' (a) The protection and advancena'en1 of the common interests -of the roail-traris

port industry; (b) the consideration of and, when desirable, .taking of action_ with . regard to all questions relating to the mutual. interests of members of the industry. •

Mr. E. B. Howes said he felt that note should. be taken 'ofcurrent politi cal thought about transport, some encouragement being given to transport people by making more Widely known the existence of policies alternative to those already being adumbrated, After discussion, a resolution to the following effect, proposed by Mr. J. A. Dun,nage and seconded by, Mr. W. Nunn, was enthusiastically carried:— That the meeting noted the T.U.C. declaration on transport iolicy, and calls the attention of the; public to the recommendation of the Royal CornreisSion on_ Transport, 1930, which remains: the latest authoritative pro-. iimincernent on transport policy. It suggeStS that a further inquiry: of a, similar authoritative nature should be an indispensable preliminary to any move in the direction of neW or greater control of mechanical road -transport. That the Conference would be prepared at .such' inquiry to Submit a new and constructive' analysis of the whole situation of road trans-pint in Britain; Which will shriw that by removing the oppressive legal and fiscal handicaps, consumers' ff`eeds Could be met more ii deg tely a nd more economically than had hitherto been riossible.,-,

• The Conference will 'next meet –officially in 'Birmingham on October 18.
