• Seven HGV drivers, who recently appeared before the new West Midland Licensing Authority John Mervyn Pugh after being convicted of two drinking and driving offences, will not be granted HGV driving licences unless they can produce a medical certificate from their doctor stating that they do not have an alcohol problem.
The drivers are Geoffrey Allen of West Bromwich, Christopher Gregory of Worcester, John Jones of Shrewsbury and Simon Deam, Samuel Thompson, William Tinkler and Sagu Deen all of Birmingham.
Mervyn Pugh says that the full effects of drinking and driving offences are not always fully appreciated. They can be quite terrible. It is often the wives and children who suffer the most. Not only is the driver's own insurance premium likely to rise considerably but his employer's is also likely to go up as a result of his employee's drinking and driving.
